Francisco Marto was born on the 11th June 1908 and his sister Jacinta on the 11th March 1910. They were the youngest of eleven children in the Marto family. In 1916, together with their cousin Lucia, they took their flocks out to pasture on the small area in Fatima, Portugal known as the Cova da Iria where they had three supernatural encounters with an angel.
In 1917, on the 13th May, and then on the consequent 13th of every month till October, they had apparitions from Our Lady, who wanted to deliver a message of conversion and of peace to the world through the children and to encourage humanity to pray the rosary.
On the 23rd December 1918 Francisco and Jacinta fell ill. They suffered their illness with acceptance and offered their suffering for the conversion of sinners. Francisco died on the 4th April 1919 and Jacinta died on the 20th February 1920.
Francisco and Jacinta Marto were beatified on the 13th May of the year 2000, by the great Pope John Paul II in Fatima.
